As a result of its rich and diverse history, Detroit, Michigan is a blend of many cultures and ethnicities.

Today Detroit faces a huge challenge as its automotive industry is in jeopardy, home foreclosure rates are among the highest in the country and its city government in shambles following the resignation of its city mayor.

Metro Detroit’s unemployment rate increased to 17.3 percent in September 2009, up from 17 percent in August, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth. The rate for the Detroit area encompassing Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer, Livingston and St. Clair counties was nearly double that of a year ago — 8.9 percent in September 2008.

The stimulus package could provide some support for Michigan which is suffering more than most states due to higher unemployment, the gasping auto industry and educational cuts. The stimulus package would provide the state with assistance for dislocated workers, additional Pell Grants, Medicaid payments and funds to improve public infrastructure.
